Maunakea Tower Apartments, located at 1245 Maunakea Street in downtown Honolulu, is a 32-story affordable housing high-rise that has long served as a vital residential community on the edge of Chinatown. Originally built in 1977, the property consists of 379 units, including 254 one-bedroom units and 125 two-bedroom units, and is home primarily to kupuna (elderly residents).

In 2024, the 50-year-old building completed a $40 million renovation to modernize both individual residences and shared spaces, ensuring the long-term livability and safety of the community. Unit improvements included new windows, kitchen cabinets, countertops, flooring, painting, appliances, plumbing, and electrical fixtures, along with the installation of fire sprinklers in each apartment. During the renovation, residents were temporarily relocated to onsite “hotel” units until their permanent homes were ready.

The project also enhanced common areas throughout the property, upgrading corridors, elevators, the mailroom, and laundry room, while introducing new resident amenities such as a classroom and exercise room. Existing features, including a swimming pool, basketball court, and community center, continue to provide recreational and gathering spaces for residents.

Situated in a highly walkable neighborhood, Maunakea Tower offers convenient access to shopping, employment centers, higher education institutions, museums, and Honolulu’s waterfront parks. With its rich history, comprehensive renovations, and commitment to affordability, Maunakea Tower Apartments remains a cornerstone of community living for Honolulu’s senior population.
